It’s a classic Gorge dilemma. You live in Hood River. The couch you’ve been hunting for a month finally pops up — $400, perfect dimensions, moss-green velvet. It’s in a walk-up in SE Portland. Seller works weekdays and wants it gone by Friday. The drive is an hour and five minutes without traffic and closer to ninety with it. You don’t own a truck. Your Subaru doesn’t count.
Welcome to the other side of Portland’s Marketplace: buying from 60 miles away.
Hood River’s secondhand market is real, but it’s thin. When you open the Marketplace map and pan west, the selection multiplies tenfold the moment you cross into Multnomah County. The question isn’t whether to shop Portland Marketplace — it’s how to get the stuff home. Here’s what actually works in 2026.
Option 1: Ask the Seller to Meet You Halfway
Cost: $0, plus gas to Cascade Locks or Troutdale Effort: Medium, depends on them Reality check: Works more often than you’d think
About 1 in 5 Portland sellers will agree to meet at a midpoint if you ask nicely — Troutdale (Glenn Otto Park), Cascade Locks (Thunder Island parking), or the Multnomah Falls overflow lot are the classics. It saves them the walk-up carry too.
When to try it: Small items (under 80 lbs, fits in a sedan with the seats down). Offer to cover their gas ($20) as a sweetener — most will refuse, but the offer lands well.
Option 2: Rent a U-Haul in The Dalles or Hood River
Cost: $85–140 round-trip Effort: High. You’re driving I-84 twice in one day. Reality check: The mileage eats you alive
U-Haul has a location on Cascade Avenue in Hood River and another in The Dalles. Cargo van is $19.95 base + $0.99/mile. Hood River to SE Portland and back is 130 miles. That’s $128 in mileage alone, plus base, plus insurance, plus fuel (cargo vans get ~14 mpg in the Gorge’s grades). Expect $150 total on a good day, $180 if traffic has you circling.
When it’s the right call: You’re picking up multiple items on the same Portland run. Hit 3-4 sellers, make the day count. Otherwise the math doesn’t work.
Option 3: The Sandy Park-and-Swap
Cost: $40–60 in your gas, plus a favor Effort: Medium Reality check: The hidden gem of Gorge logistics
Find a friend in Portland, Gresham, or Sandy. Have the seller drop the item at their place. Pick it up on your next Portland trip (coffee roasters, Costco run, medical appointment — everyone has one).
This works because it decouples “getting it out of the seller’s apartment” from “getting it to Hood River.” The seller’s happy because their couch is gone today. You’re happy because you don’t need to drop everything.
When it’s the right call: You already have a reason to go to Portland this week. Item fits in a friend’s garage, driveway, or covered porch without being a burden.
Option 4: TaskRabbit / Lugg From Portland, Fetchlist for the Gorge Leg
Cost: $120–250 depending on item Effort: Medium Reality check: Two-hop logistics is real
Lugg and Dolly serve the Portland metro. They don’t come to Hood River. But you can hire them to move an item across town — seller’s apartment to a Portland staging spot — and then hire us (or rent a truck) for the Portland-to-Gorge leg. Two transactions, one item moved.
It’s more moving parts than most people want, but it’s the only way to get Portland-only services involved in a Gorge delivery.
When it’s the right call: A heavy item (sectional, fridge, piano) where the Portland end needs professional muscle and the highway drive is the easier part.
Option 5: Fetchlist Gorge Delivery
Cost: $125 flat for most items Portland-to-Hood River; $200–250 for appliances Effort: None Reality check: This is what we do, and the Gorge route is built for this
Full disclosure — this is our company.
Fetchlist covers Hood River, The Dalles, White Salmon, Bingen, Mosier, and Cascade Locks with an added Gorge fee on top of our standard $75 Portland-metro rate. You text us the listing, we handle the Portland end (contacting the seller, paying, inspecting, picking up), and we deliver to your door in the Gorge. Usually next-day, sometimes same-day if the listing goes up before 11am.
The thing that makes the Gorge route work is that we bundle it. If two Hood River customers text us on the same day, we batch-run the truck. That’s how we keep the fee at $125 instead of the $180 a solo U-Haul would cost you.
When it’s the right call: You live in the Gorge, you don’t have a truck or the time to burn a whole day on I-84, and you want the seller handled for you.

Frequently Asked Questions
How long does a Portland-to-Hood River delivery take?
If you text us before 11am and the seller is responsive, we can usually deliver same-day. After 11am it’s next-day most of the time. The Gorge leg itself is 75 minutes each way — we batch Hood River runs to keep it affordable.
What if I’m in White Salmon or Bingen?
No extra charge beyond the standard Gorge rate. We cross the Hood River or Bridge of the Gods — whichever makes sense for the run — and handle Washington-side deliveries the same way.
Can you do pickups inside the Gorge too (not just Portland)?
Yes. Hood River or The Dalles sellers selling to a Gorge buyer is our cheapest scenario — $65 flat inside the Gorge. That’s often cheaper than the seller’s cost to deliver.
What about oversize items — pianos, hot tubs, sheds?
Case by case. Pianos and hot tubs we can usually do for $300–450 depending on stairs and access. Anything that needs a trailer we’ll tell you upfront before committing.
What happens if the seller backs out after you’ve already left Portland?
You don’t pay. We eat the miles. That’s the deal — if the item doesn’t match the listing, or the seller ghosts, you owe nothing.
Do you offer weekend Gorge runs?
Saturdays yes, Sundays limited. Saturday runs tend to book up Friday night, so text early if you want a weekend pickup.
The Short Version
If it’s small and the seller is flexible, meet them at Cascade Locks.
If you need a truck and you’re making a Portland day of it anyway, rent a U-Haul in Hood River and hit multiple pickups.
If you just want the thing delivered without thinking about it, send us the listing — we’ll text you back with a quote within the hour.
Hood River’s secondhand market is limited. Portland’s isn’t. That 60-mile gap doesn’t have to stop you from buying the couch, the desk, the mountain bike, or the sectional you actually want.
